Printed Circuit Board Assembly
PCB assembly, a.k.a PCB fabrication, is a very complicated and intricate set of procedures that must be followed intently to manufacture a PCB that sticks to the functional specs set by the designer. Since the majority of PCBs produced today have a few layers, this quick summary will cover parts of the multilayer PCB fabrication process. Many companies choose to use off-shore facilities for PCB fabrication, but some, such as Advanced Circuits of Colorado, manufacture their boards in house.
Prior to placing components on the printed circuit board, solder paste should be applied to board areas where the components will placed. These areas are marked with what are called component pads, and the paste, a combination of solder and flux, is applied to these pads, lightly coating them. This can be done by utilizing a solder screen. Solder screens come from the PCB files submitted to a manufacturer. The screen is placed over the board, and paste is squeezed through the holes, which match the corresponding component pads on the board.
Once the paste is on the board, a Pick and Place machine grabs the components and sticks them to correct areas of the board. The solder paste will hold the components to the board for now.
After all of the traces and components are pasted to the board, the circuit board will then be heated so the connections are completed. Usually this consists of sending the board through a reflow oven. This machine heats the board to a temperature at which the soldered connections will melt into place, but the electrical components on the board will not be damaged. This process is the same for both single and multilayer PCBs. After a required cooling period, the PCB will be ready for inspection.
The type of inspection performed depends on the complexity of the board. Multilayer PCBs with dozens of components are generally put through an automated optical inspection process, in which a computer compares the finished product with the specs contained in the PCB layout files. These machines also inspect the board joints to make sure they are solid.
No matter what, printed circuit boards have to be tested before they are delivered. The last tests are chosen depending on how big the board is and also the layout of the PCB.
